MANAGEMENT OF SNORING

 

 

Snoring results from the relaxation of the uvula and soft palate.

As the  uvula and the soft palate relax, they partially block the airway, resulting in irregular airflow and vibrations.

Causes:

Snoring is usually thought to occur due to any one or more of the following causes:

1. Throat weakness

2. Obesity

3. Obstruction in the nasal passageway

4. Obstructive sleep apnea

5. Sleep deprivation

6. Relaxants such as alcohol or other drugs relaxing throat muscles

7. Sleeping on the back

8. Mispositioned jaw

 
 
Management:

While there is no sure treatment to completely stop snoring, following measures do help in managing this problem, as per the underlying cause(s) - 

1. Anti-infectives in the infection in the nasal passage:
  • Chirayata, Ativisha, Gandhak, Yashad (Infex tab)
  • Guggulu, Guduchi, Dashmula, Manjishtha, Sariva, Nimba, Haridra
  • Tamra, Parad, Malla etc.

2. Anti-allergics in naso-pharyngeal allergy:
  • Shati, Madhuyashti, Zaharmohra, Yashad (Lergex tab)
  • Dugdhika, Kantakari, Haridra, Shirish
  • Tamra, Sphatika etc.

3. Anti-inflammatory drugs in inflammation of the nasopharynx due to infection or allergy:
  • Shallaki, Erandmula, Jatiphal (Loswel tab)
  • Guggulu, Dashmula, Rasna, Haridra etc.

4. Anti-obesity drugs in obesity:
  • Guggulu, Brahmi, Rakta-maricha, Pippali, Gandira  (Thyrin tab)
  • Guggulu, Dashmula, Rasona, Haridra, Shilajatu, etc.

5. Psychotropic drugs in anxiety and depression causing sleep deprivation:
  • Tagar, Brahmi, (Mentocalm tab) in anxiety neurosis
  • Jyotishmati, Akarkara, Vacha, Gandira (Eleva tab) in mental depression.  

6. Stop smoking to manage throat weakness.

7. Avoid relaxants such as alcohol or other drugs relaxing throat muscles, especially before sleep.

8. Avoid seeping on the back.
