PROPRIETARY AYURVEDIC MEDICINES HAVING TOO MANY INGREDIENTS?

Dear Young Ayurveda Doctor!

Too frequently, many of you ask me, 'Should I prescribe a proprietary ayurvedic medicine that has too many ingredients?'

You are forced to ask the above question because the manufacturing companies of such medicines repeatedly make tall claims of their efficacy like this - 'Doctor, Just see! To make our product effective, we have added so many ingredients (medicines) in it, that have been indicated in ayurveda for the management of the indicated diseases for our product!'

My answer is - 'Never prescribe a proprietary ayurvedic medicine just because it has too many ingredients.'

It's not the number of the ingredients in a proprietary ayurvedic medicine that makes it effective, but it is the therapeutically effective dose of the individual ingredients that determines its efficacy.

Each of us know fairly well that every drug (ingredient) has its own therapeutically effective dose, at which it is effective.

Now, if a proprietary ayurvedic medicine contains too many ingredients (drugs) but the ingredients are far below their therapeutic effective dose, I would say -

Reject that product!
Never prescribe it!
It is ineffective!
Whatever the results you get after using it, are its placebo effects!

You will be surprised to know that many of the proprietary ayurvedic medicines, quite popular on the market, and widely prescribed by many of the doctors (esp. the modern medicine doctors, who know quite a little about these medicines), are essentially placebo medicines.

It means, such medicines work only because the patient has faith in the prescribing doctor. Otherwise, such proprietary ayurvedic medicines are useless.

Some day in future, after rigorous scientific testing, such medicines are quite likely to get banned.

In my view, it is inhumane to manufacture a proprietary ayurvedic medicine, only for its placebo effect.

So, while prescribing a proprietary ayurvedic medicine, we need to be fully sure that all its ingredients are in therapeutically effective dose.

Let us not get swayed by the attractive packaging of these products, or the army of English speaking marketing teams pestering the doctors to get these medicines prescribed, or the attractive gifts quite often distributed to the doctors, or the huge CMEs thrown up by the companies in costly hotels spending lavishly to promote such medicines.

Let effect of the medicine and safety of the patient be the only criteria behind manufacturing a proprietary ayurvedic medicine.

Truly speaking, if such medicines are prescribed, everybody connected with ayurveda is at loss - be it the patient, the ayurveda doctor, or even the credibility of ayurveda!

The only beneficiary in such a case remains the Company that manufactures such placebo products in the name of proprietary ayurvedic medicines.
