Ayurvedic Management of Viral Infection

Various viral infections have been becoming too prevalent over the outgoing several decades, resulting in a lot of morbidity and mortality. 

We can manage different viral infections on the basis of the management of visham jvara (विषम-ज्वर). We find following ayurvedic management of prevalent viral infections, quite effective - 

 I. Inhibit the replication of viruses by antiviral drugs:

Several drugs used in the managment of visham-jvara (विषम-ज्वर), have been reported to act by inhibiting the replication of viruses (विषाणुहर) and boosting the immunity (ओजःवर्धनम्). The most effective drugs in this group include - 

• Kalmegh, Bhallatak, Dugdhika (Antivir Tablet);

• Bhumi-amalaki (Phylocil Tablet)

II. Boost the immunity by immune-boosting drugs:
Several rasayana and ojo-vardhak drugs used to enhance the bala (रोग-प्रतिरोधक क्षमता), used in the managment of oja-kshaya (ओजःक्षयः), have been reported to act by boosting the immunity (ओजःवर्धनम्) and/or modulating the immunity (आमविषहरम्). The most effective drugs in this group include - 
• Ashwagandha, Guduchi, Tulasi, Pippali, Yashad (Imunie Tablet);
• Shilajatu, Amalaki, Abhrak, Muktashukti, Svarnamakshik, Yashad (Minovit Tablet)

III. Manage the associated abnormalities:
The disease producing viruses can result in several pathologies that need to be managed for saving the life of the patient, preventing further progression of the disease processes, and offering relief in the troubles occurring to the patient. These include - 

1. Inflammation (शोथ):
The underlying inflammation though a defensive process by the body needs to be managed at times, especially if it endangers the life of the patient or becomes too troublesome. Several effective anti-inflammatory drugs include - 
• Shallaki, Erandmula, Jatiphal (Loswel Tablet);
• Guggulu, Bhallatak, Chitrak (Revplaq Tablet);
• Ashwagandha, Shilajatu, Dugdhika, Gandira (Cartogen Tablet);
• Haridra, Guduchi, Dashmula, Rasna

2. Pain (वेदना):
The associated pain, too, is a defensive mechanism by the body. Yet, when too troublesome, pain needs to be relieved. Several effective analgesic drugs include - 
• Jatiphal, Vatsanabh, Godanti (Dolid Tablet);
• Tagar, Parsika-yavani, Rakta-marich, Jatiphal (Dealco Tablet);
• Pippalimula, Asthi-shrinkhala, Guggulu, Shallaki 

3. Breathlessness (श्वासकष्ट):
 In case the lungs are involved, especially if the patient develops bronchial inflammation / constriction, and pneumonia, need for to support the respiratory function may arise. Some the effective drugs used to relieve the broncho-constriction, include - 
• Antamul, Dugdhika, Ark, Gandira (Asthex Tablet);
• Shati, Madhuyashti (Lergex Tablet);
• Pushkarmula, Bharangi, Vasa, Kantakari 

IV. General Management: 

The general condition of the patient has to be managed by proper nutrition, fluid replenishment, rest, and moral support.
